HUNT MEETING AT WASHDYKE

MARITEA NARROWLY WINS CLAREMONT

RYELAND’S BRILLIANT DEBUT AS ’CHASER

The light-weights, Maritea and Hunter’s Choice, had a thrilling lastfurlong struggle for the major honours in the Claremont Handicap at the South Canterbury Hunt Club’s meeting on Saturday. After there had been a long inspection of the photo-finish print Maritea was given a nose decision. By that time W. F. Ellis had brought back Hunter’s Choice into the winner’s unsaddling position and the Treasure Hunt gelding’s owner, Mr T. J. Lister, had been congratulated by several in the birdcage. Ellis said afterwards that the result had been the most puzzling in his experience as a jockey. A large crowd inspected the prints of the finish. What puzzled many was that in the “mirror print” the saddle cloth of Hunter’s Choice, which is longer in the body than Maritea, showed clearly ahead of the Goretrained filly’s. The different position of the horses’ heads as they reached the post meant the difference between winning and losing. There was another close finish for third,z Battle Ensign getting a nose decision from The Tongs, a stablemate of the winner. This, too, surprised the jockeys of these two horses, who returned to the birdcage in order suggesting that The Tongs had held on for third. Maritea, a three-year-old filly by Finis from Invest, is raced by Mr E. A. M. Ussher and trained by J. R. Cochrane, who is still trailing L. H. Pratt, Orari, by one point for the trainers’ premiership this season. Pratt was successfully represented earlier in the day by Suncrest, easy winner of the Gleniti Stakes. Ryeland made a brilliant debut as a steeplechaser in the Teschemaker Steepechase, winning with ease after giving a splendid display of clean, fast jumping. Mr L. Harris’s six-year-old Nightly gelding had the race won a long way from home, but he was not ridden out until he jumped the second last fence. After that his speed kept him well clear of hi ßye?and, e trained at Riccarton by E. J. Jennings, has a bright future as a crosscountry performer. ’ Maritea’s surprise win in the Claremont Handicap left the way open for a big double, and this proved ’so when Doctor Pippin won the Levels Hack Handicap, second leg of the double. Doctor Pippin finished very strongly from the middle of the field and easily beat Misty Range and Chief Light. There were 81J tickets on the MariteaDoctor Pippin combination. 67 J of them off-course, and the double dividend was £532 15s 6d for £l. The weather was fine, the attendance fair, and the track slow. The on-course totalisator turnover was £30,806, including £2858 Ws on the double, compared with £33,851 10s last year.

Maritea’s Strong Run A sustained run from well back in the field carried Maritea to a narrow but meritorious win in the Claremont Handicap. In a field 'of 22 she did not become prominent until after passing the halfmile, but she joined the leading bunch near the furlong and got up to beat Hunter's Choice by a nose. Detective and Lord Lothian were the leaders when the field settled down, and Dashing and Cloudy View were trailing with Gold Tip, Gardez, and Snuffbox handy, clear of Sir Abbot. The Tongs, Travesty, Chowder, and Hunter’s Choice. The Tongs moved fast from his position to join the leaders racing to the three furlongs. Cloudy View was close by, and so were Lord Lothian and Snuffbox, with Hunter’s Choice moving through next two places in front of Maritea. Cloudy View weakened under her weight outside the furlong, where little separated Lord Lothian, The Tongs, Hunter’s Choice, and Maritea, with Battle Ensign making up ground fast on the outer.

Hunter’s Choice appeared to be holding Maritea safely 50 yards from the post, but the Gore filly got in the deciding stride.

Battle Ensign also cut The Tongs out of third place right on the post. Taj made up ground from the home turn for fifth, and Travesty did well to finish sixth, this being his first race after a spell. Closest of the others were Trinidad. Royal Voyage, and Royal Monarch. '. Ry slang's Success Ryeland followed: Irish Glance and Gay Music for most of the last round in the Teschemaker Steeplechase, drew clear easily running to the last fence, and outpaced the others, winning by eight lengths from Fort Silver, one of his few opponents not weakening at the finish. Irish Glance was 10 lengths back third, and Gay Music, which pulled up sore, was six lengths away fourth. Irish Glance did most of the pacemaking. He'was headed by Night Fighter for a short time, and Ryeland moved forward to join him with a round to go. There they were racing clear of Night Fighter and Gay Music, with Scorpion and Fort Silver next. Irish Glance led past the seven furlongs by two lengths from Gay Music; and Ryeland was making up ground at every fence with good jumping. Fort Silver was also improving his position there three lengths behind Byeland and four lengths ahead of Scorpion, whose jumping had been patchy; Gay Music and Irish Glance were four lengths clear of-Ryeland -starting the last half-mile, but the Riccarton horse ran past them with ease after jumping the second last fence. It was soort clear that he had the race won.

Fort Silver battled on solidly but could not match Ryeland for speed. There were no spills in the race, but Night Fighter, Cherwell, and Curtissair were pulled up.

Bold Challenge Doctor Pippin finished strongly from the middle of the field for a clear-cut win in the Levels Hack Handicap. This was the second success of his career, his first being at Ashburton as a two-year-old last season.

Doctor Pippin was in. the middle of a strung-out field after two furlongs, where Roue and Jesse James led by three lengths IJ°ht Teal With aether gap to Chief ORoue had Jesse James’s measure on the home turn, but he was being hard ridden outside the furlong, where Misty Range and Doctor Pippin were working into challenging positions wider out on the track. Misty Range mastered Roue near the furlong, but she could not match Doctor Pippin for finishing speed. Doctor Pippin rdn the race out strongly to beat the Washdyke mare by three lengths. Chief Light got up to beat Roue by a head for third.

Abbot’s Choice was beaten off In fifth place ahead of Teal, Jesse James, and Algaro.

Half Sovereign and Misty Range were slow away. Results: —
