HOCKEY

REPRESENTATIVE GAMES

SERIES OF FRIENDLY MATCHES

The Canterbury Hockey Association postponed its senior grade games on Saturday and held a series of friendly games with Ashburton and West Coast teams. Tlie main attraction was a game between the Canterbury representative side and a team chosen from South Island Minor Associations. The game was fast and even, and although Canterbury won by 3 goals to 2, the Minor Associations’ team had the better of the game. The teams were:—

Canterbury.—D. Goldsmith; M. Rendle, A. McOscar; E. D. Bennett, M. Wall, Les. Lloyd; I. Cummins, C. Currie, J. Reece, I. Armstrong, M. McKinnon. South Island Minor Associations.—A. Eatwell (Marlborough); Q. Taylor (Marlborough), D. Marshall (South Canterbury);. A. Wesney (Nelson), I. Stirling (Nelson), J. Kiddey (West Coast); E. Millar (South Canterbury), I. Smith (Ashburton), D. Maurice (West Coast), J. Stirling (Nelson), A. Boustridge (West Coast). After the opening bully both teams tested the defence for weak spots. Then came a clever and brilliant move by the Canterbury forwards. Lloyd trapped the ball neatly and sent on to McKinnon, who went up the left flank to Minor Associations* twenty-five, where he centred smartly, for Reece to trick the goalkeeper and score easily. Sound defence by Marshall and Kiddey set the Minor Associations* left wing moving, and after a short melee in Canterbury’s circle J. Stirling made the scores equal. Brilliant kicking by the Canterbury goalkeeper, Goldsmith, brought rounds of applause, and at half-time the score was unchanged.

The visitors made a series of attacks early in the 'second half, I. Smith and J. Stirling being prominent in leading several. A penalty bully against a Canterbury back v. as won by I. Smith, but the McKinnon-Armstrong-Reece combination soon made the score equal again, A penalty bully against I. Buxton (North Otago), who had replaced Taylor, was won by Reece, and this gave Canterbury a victory by one goal. The Minor Associations’ team was unlucky to lose, as on the play it was the beter. The players kept on the ball more than the Canterbury players, who in some cases were slow to tackle. D. Marshall, at left back, played splendidly on defence, and his clearing hits were well E laced. I. Stirling, at centre-half, was etter than any of the opposing halves, as his passes to his forwards were better placed. I. Smith, J. Stirling, and D. Maurice made a splendid trio in the froni* line, and both wings, B. Millar and Boustridge, made good use of their chances. By comparison, the Canterbury players were in the main slow in their passes and intercepting. Goldsmith, in goal, was an exception, and he gave a brilliant display, stopping many shots and kicking well upfieid. M. Rendle and A. McOscar were both safe in the backs, and Rendle placed his passes well. Les Lloyd was the best of a moderate half line, and he found it hard to stop the opposing right wing. J. Reece gave a brilliant display of clever stick play and ball control, and he and Currie were prominent in most attacks. McKinnon made good use of his chances, but Armstrong has played better. The umpires were M. Newton (Ashburton) and N. Hocking (Canterbury).
