NEW ZEALANDER IN FIFTH PLACE

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) 8 LONDON, July 18. \\ Major Norman McCaw, the proprietor a Portsmou th hotel, won the Queen’s *•'- a 5 e at Bisley today a score of 273. ' A former Royal Air Force warrantofficer, R. Bennett, of Guildford, Surrey, who was the 1947 winner, and LieutenantColonel Steven Johnson (Canada), both finished with 272. Captain r. h . Nicholl (Petone) won •„ fifth prize and the N.R.A. badge with a ° f Z 4O in the second stage and a total of 271. F. J. Jeune (Gisborne) 270 (140 in the . second stage) was eighth. J. S. Wooster (Burnham) 268 (141 in the second stage) was sixteenth, and H. . /•. Donald, the New Zealand team cap- . tain 266 (142 in the second stage) was twenty-fourth. ' Johnson was unlucky as he had led all the way in the final 1000 yards, and - with four shots to go he seemed almost certain to win.

Only Bennett and McCaw could beat . him. McCaw finished first with 273 and Johnson with one shot to go could have won with a bull or tied with an inner, but he misjudged a sudden gust of wind -t and scored a magpie. Other leading scores were:— Rear-Admiral F. E. P. Hutton (Colchester) 271, Captain R. D. Greig (late ■ Royal Scots Fusilers and the 1950 winner) 271; R. R. Clarke (New South Wales) 270, G. F. Arnold (Dorking) 270. Lieutenant-Colonel Johnson, with a total of 476 r won the silver medal and the ’...second prize in the Coronation aggregate - for the highest scores in the eight main service rifle competitions. The bronze medal and the third prize l,was won by G. G. Barratt, of Australia, who also scored 276. ■*' New Zealand prize winers were:— N. E. Palmer, bronze medal and tenth . prize, scoring 469. M.
