U.S. ARTILLERY UNIT HIT

Heavy Casualty List SEOUL, July 16. About 300 Americans from a United States artillery regiment were killed or are missing in one of the worst blows to an American unit in the Korean war. The disaster occurred early on Tuesday morning at the height of the first Communist drive when the Chinese hit the South Korean Capitol Division between Kumhwa and Kumsong. The American unit was supporting the South Koreans with artillery, when the South Korean regiment ahead was overwhelmed.

Survivors estimate that 1000 Chinese suddenly surged over the American gun positions. Some gunners went down as they fired point blank at the swarming attackers. Others were killed as they damaged their guns to make them ineffective in capture.
