AT WASHDYKE TODAY

CLOUDY VIEW IN FORM

CHEERIO SELECTED FOR HACK SPRINT

Cloudy View showed she was able to win both legs of totalisator doubles during her run of successes as a hack last summer, and today she may take 1 her good record a stage further by winning the Claremont Handicap, the first leg at the South Canterbury Hunt Club's meeting. The Orari-trained Airway mare quickly recaptured her best form after a spell, winning easily at Waimate last week. That race should have improved her. the distance of today’s race should not trouble her, nor should her weight of 9-5, 21b less than her stablemate, Royal Voyage. Cloudly View will, as usual, be ridden by the leading horseman, W. D. Skelton, whose brother, R. J. Skelton. will ride Royal Voyage. The consistent Wingatui-trained mare Dashing, and the smart Royal Arch gelding Lord Lothian, may make Cloudy View work hardest for success. The scratching of Finance and What Next for the Claremont Handicap have allowed Saxonia and Royal Monarch to re-enter the field. Cheerio. Misty Range, and Direct Passage are expected to dominate tne finish of the Levels Hack Handicap, second leg of the double. Cheerio’s form has been more solid than that of the other two and he will be hard to beat if he runs one of his best races. Tiles and Radiant Chief have been scratched for this race. Riccarton Candidates Two steeplechases and a hurdle race on today’s programme may help to throw some light on the chances of horses with engagements in the Grand National Steeplechase and the Grand National Hurdles. Fort Silver, a Grand National Steeples entrant, is the early favourite for the Teschemaker Steeplechase. His weight of 11-4 may not be too burdensome over the distance, two miles and a half. It is also in his favour that he will be racing over familiar country, for he is trained at Washdyke. This race marks the debut of Ryeland as a steeplechaser, and a winning debut it may be if the Riccarton-trained Nightly gelding jumps as competently as he has done in his training. -Cherry Prince, a stablemate of Fort Silver, is favoured for the Pareora Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase. Top weight of 11-2 could have been troublesome in heavy going, but the footing today will be good for this time of the year. The Waimate winner, Six Cylinder, may trouble Cherry Prince most at the weights. King Karri, whose fourth at Ashburton was a sound effort, will also be well in the picture if his jumping is up to the usual standard. Cherwell has been scratched for this race.

Ashlar, King Willow. My Friend, and Red Tinge are scratchings for the Gleniti Stakes. This is a race for two-year-olds and upwards, the older horses conceding the two-year-olds 101 b. At the weights, Suncrest, a half-sister to Regoli, may be too good for her older rivals. Her second at Waimate last week was possibly the effort of an improver. Scratchings have allowed Wait-a-Bit to return to the field, and this smart Treasure Hunt colt will be prominent in the finish if he is well forward. He has not raced since January. Royal Sable may do best of the older horses.

Valid’s chance of winning the Hadlow Hurdles looks bright. He was a class above those that opposed him at Waimate and . should come through this more strenuous test with honours. Low Tide, another winner at Waimate, may improve a promising record by winning the Pentlow Hack Handicap. He is trained bv J. R. Cochrane, who is running L. H. Pratt close for the trainers’ premiership this season. Further riding engagements are:—E. G. Low. Private Angelo, Low Tide, The Tongs, Algaro; ’L. French, Pyramus. The weather was fine in Timaru yesterday, and the track should provide good going. Brackets:— Glen-iti Stakes: Royal Lad and Royal Sable, Milling Bay and Negus.
