FRIDAY (Before Mr F. F. Reid, S.M.) SUSPENDED SENTENCE Leonard Henry George England, aged 51, a painter and paperhanger (Mr A. B. Lawson), was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within 18 months if called upon when he appeared for sentence on a charge of stealing on July 14 a wallet and £l7 10s, the property of Ernest Guildford Carter. Mr Lawson said that the accused, apart from a lapse about 12 years ago, had not been in trouble. His wages were not high and his domestic responsibilities caused him worry. He yielded very foolishly to a sudden temptation. He a war pensioner and the form of neurosis With which he had been invalided from the war4could have affected his conduct after finding the wallet. "You haven't had an entirely blameless record. You must have known that a substantial sum such as the wallet contained could not have been kept by you,” said the Magistrate. "You appear to have led an honest, hard-working life for the last 12 or 13 years, but I warn you that if you lapse again nothing will stop you being put in gaol.” An order for restitution of £2 10s was made. REMANDED Neville Mayo, aged 22, a labourer, was remanded to appear on July 23 on a charge of stealing £2 10s, the property of Cyril John William Fearn, on June 23. Bail in the sum of £5O and one surety of £5O was allowed, provided Mayo reports daily to the police. Earl Prince, aged 19, a labourer, and Noel Francis Murray, aged 17, a labourer, were remanded to July 20 on two joint charges of converting motor vehicles. The first charge was that on July 9 they converted to their own use a motor-van valued at £7OO, the property of Alexander Arthur Allen. The second charge, of attempted conversion, concerned a motorvan valued at £7OO, the property of Ronald Charles William Poulsen. TRAFFIC CASES In cases brought by the police against traffic offenders the following penalties were imposed:— Driving without due care and attention: David Kininmont Allen, costs only; Joel David Dale, £3; Leonard Noel Forsyth, 30s; John Grant, costs only (no driver’s licence, costs only; no warrant of fitness, costs only); Alma Frances Jennison, costs only (no driver’s licence, costs only). Failing to give way: William Cobelick, £2 (no warrant of fitness, costs only); Desmond Albert Edwards, 30s; Charles Stewart Langley, £3; Norman Harry Archer Morris, £3; Royal Edward Lingard Thomson, 30s. Incorrect parking: Roy Vincent Dickey, 10s. No warrant of fitness: Eric George Wood, costs only. _ Riding bicycle carelessly: Edward Bryant Stroud, £l. Insufficient lights: Roy Braken Vincent, 30s (failing to display licence labels, 10s). CIVIL CASE (Before Mr E. A. Lee, S.M.) ORDER FOR POSSESSION. An order was made that Arthur E. Williams, a farmer (Mr S. J. Mann, of the Labour Department), give Neil James McPhail, a leather merchant (Mr A. I. Cottrell), possession of a dwellinghouse at the corner of Lavaud and Baird streets, Akaroa, within three months. The case was first heard on May 15, 1952, and adjourned sine die to be brought on at seven days’ notice. After hearing •vidence by one witness and legal submissions by counsel, the Magistrate made the order for possession.
