RIFLE SHOOTING
N.Z. PRIZEWINNERS (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) . LONDON, July 16. Lieutenant-Colonel Steve Johnson (Canada) won the St. George challenge vase and gold cross over 900 yards at Bisley today. He scored 73 out of 75 from 15 shots.
Among the prize winners were the New Zealanders—Air Commodore S. Wallingford (R.N.Z.A.F.), who scored 69; J. W. Curtain (Masterton), M. C. Gordon (Hastings) 68; F. J. Jeune (Gisborne), and S. Luxford (Palmerston North), 67. Squadron Leader H. L. Homer (R.N.Z.A.F., Lower Hutt), won first prize in the St. George consolation match over 900 yards with, a score of 48 out of a possible 50. R. H. Nicholl (Petone) was sixth with 47, and H. M. Ward (Masterton) tenth with 46. Lieutenant-Colonel D. T. Burke (Lansing, Ontario), the Canadian who won the King’s Prize in 1942 and was in the final for five years running from 1927 to 1931, won the “Daily Mail” prize of £5O after a tie shoot on the 500 yards range today. On Monday, July 13, he scored the highest possible 50 to tie with N. Palmer, of Nelson, New Zealand, and J. M. Tetlow, of Cambridge University. In tonight’s tieshoot each man had three shots. Colonel Burke scored three bulls, Tetlow was next best with an inner followed by two bulls. The New Zealander also scored 14 points, but was placed third, having an inner with his middle shot.
