BRITISH WOMEN’S OPEN TITLE

GOLF

TWO N.Z. PLAYERS BEATEN (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, June 23. Playing magnificently, in ideal conditions, the British international. Miss Elizabeth Price, scored an overwhelming third round win over .the New Zealander, Miss Doreen Blundell, in the British women's open golf championship at Royal Porthcawl today. New Zealand’s interest 4n the championship faded when their champion. Miss Margaret Hughes, fell a victim to splendid attacking play by the Irish international, Miss Moira Smyth, who won 3 and 2. Miss Price was in excellent form throughout the match, and Miss Blundell could never match the skill of her opponent, who made very few mistakes. Miss Blundell lost four of the first five holes, and was always trailing. Miss Price holed an eight-yard putt for a birdie 2 at the short fifth, and went on to reach, the turn in a brilliant 35—two strokes under the scratch score—and establish a commanding lead of 6 up. Miss Blundell could not answer such powerful golf, although she was unlucky at the fifth where she lipped the hole for a 2. After halving the tenth and eleventh in par figures, Miss Price ended the one-sided contest on the next green with a score of two under fours for the 12 holes played. Miss Hughes made a good start in her game against the Irish player. She won the first two holes, sinking a long putt on the first green for a birdie 3, and hitting the pin at the second hole. She lost the third with a miss-hit second shot and three-putted the short fourth, making the score all square. Miss Hughes’s long game was not up to her usual standard, and bunker trouble cost her the long fifth. She was still one behind at the end of nine holes. Then she lost four holes in succession. She took two shots to get clear of a sand trap at the tenth; was unable to match Miss Smyth’s magnificent birdie 2 at the short eleventh: three-putted at the twelfth, and bunkered her second shot at the dog-leg thirteenth. Miss Hughes fought back in a valiant but unsuccessful late rally, winning the short fourteenth and fifteenth holes to reduce her deficit to three, but the end came with a half at the 429-yard sixteenth.
