Among the large number who attended the ceremony were members of the Waimairi Progress League, of which Mr Broad had been president for the last 20 years, as well as representatives of the West of England Society, of which Mr Broad was a member and at one time president. The Rev. H. C. Bycroft conducted the service, and with him were the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.) and Mrs Macfarlane, Mr F. J. Vinicombe, and Mrs A. Brittenden. Mrs Brittenden unveiled the tablet which bore the inscription “In Memory of Preston E. L. Broad of this district. He lived a life of unselfish service.’’
