STREETS AT OXFORD
Sir, —As one of many residents of Oxford who use Church and Burnett streets daily, I would like to criticise the state of these so-called streets—or dirt traces, as they are at the present time. No doubt in the dry weather they have quite a good surface, but in wet weather one could plant rocks from the footpaths in the mud. How much longer, after the last two winters, will the users, as ratepayers, have to put up with the state of these two pack-tracks?—Yours, etc., PACK-HORSE. Oxford, June 15, 1953.
Sir, —Some three months ago a coating. mostly clay, was spread on Bay road and Church street. After each rain it becomes a sea of slush and mud —a real menace to all traffic, particularly as 60 children use these roads on their way to school. Their cycles and clothing become covered with mud. Two fords, at Trout stream and Mounsey’s creek, have been in a disgusting state for weeks, with ruts a foot deep and bog on either side, and would be impassable for a small car. I have been informed that the county council possesses a flag. Would it not have been a gesture of loyalty (or a duty) to hoist it on such a special occasion as the Coronation of our beloved Queen? I suggest the' chairman inspect the streets mentioned (or shingle immediately) before some serious accident happens.—Yours, etc., CONCERNED RATEPAYER. Oxford, June 19, 1953. [“Because of continuous rain last week the surface of the roads referred to has became rather sticky, and will receive treatment with fine metal when time will permit. 1 ’ This reply was received when the above- letter was referred to the Oxford County Council.]
