Coronation Sonnet
At this great moment when in the
hallowed Chair You sit enthroned, and hear the
acclamation And homage due from many a loyal
nation, Drawing all hearts to you, so young, so fair,
Yet set so high and called upon to bear So vast a burden in your consecration, Could any envy your lofty station,
Your dedicated life, your load of care?
To the loving millions faithful until death Long may you reign, a symbol and a sign, Resplendent standing in the long, long line
Of British sovereigns, champions of th’e faith, Whose crown has been, and evermore shall be, A beacon-light to all humanity. —A.W.
