BRITISH ENVOY TO EGYPT
Sir Ralph Stevenson On Sick Leave
CAIRO, May 21. Sir Ralph Stevenson, crippled with sciatica, has been granted sick leave from his post of British Ambassador to Egypt, and will leave the country on June 1, at a critical period of BritishEgyptian relations. He will be relieved by an experienced diplomat, Mr Robert Hankey, now British Minister in Budapest, who will be Charge d’Affaires with full ambassadorial powers. Sir Ralph Stevenson called on the Egyptian Foreign Minister (Dr. Mahmoud Fawzy) today. Dr. Fawzy said he had been assured it was merely sick leave and had no political implications.
A Foreign Office spokesman in London said it was intended that Sir Ralph Stevenson should return to Cairo after his sick leave.
Warning to Persian Correspondents. —The Persian Foreign Minister (Mr H. Fatemi) told foreign correspondents today they would be expelled if they cabled news deleterious to Persia’s interests—and offending Persian nationals representing the foreign press would be imprisoned.—London, May 21.
