Professor J. J. C. Smart, professor of philosophy at Adelaide University, arrived at Harewood by Skymaster yesterday to attend the first Philosophical Congress In Christchurch. He is the only Australian representative to the congress.

Dr. G. A. Currie has been appointed a member of the Advisory Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, says a Gazette notice.—(P.A.) Dr. Gilbert Archey, of Auckland, and Mr F. R. Callaghan, of Wellington, have been reappointed members of the council of the Royal Society of New Zealand, according to a notice in the Gazette.—(P.A.)

Members appointed to the Citrus Marketing Committee, according to a notice in the Gazette, are Messrs G. Barr, P. L. Bennett, C. R. Ridding, and W. H. Chudley. Mr A. R. Emanuel is appointed chairman of the committee.—(P.A.) Mr William R. Black has been appointed president of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, Ltd., in London, succeeding Mr Henry Spurrier, who becomes deputy-president, according to advice received in Wellington. Mr Black, who has been treasurer for the last five years, is a Freeman of the City of London and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Coachmakers and CoachHarness Makers. Dr. F. Llewellyn Smith and Mr A. B. Waring have been re-elected vice-presidents, and MajorGeneral J. S. Crawford has been appointed treasurer of the society.— (P.A.)

Mr S. S. Dean, chairman of the Wellington Fire Board, yesterday resigned from the board because of his appointment on the Fire Services Council The resignation will take effect from the next meeting of the board.—(P A.) Chaplain at Christ’s College for the last six years, the Rev. P. O. C. Edwards will return to England with his wife and family at the end of the year. Mr Edwards, who has become well known in Christchurch by his wbrk for youth and other organisations, is leaving New Zealand for family reasons. A cane chair and divan from the staff were presented to Mr R. W. Jack, who retired yesterday from the position of sub-manager of the Hereford street branch of the Australia and New Zealand Bank, Ltd. The manager of the branch. Mr W. B. Turvey, .also presented Mr Jack with cheques on behalf of other wellwishers. Mr H. H. Martindale, the Department of Health's principal health inspector, will arrive in Christchurch today to inspect health inspector* work in the district. He will return to Wellington on Thursday evening. Mr C. C. Staden, head waiter at Bellamy's retired yesterday after 34 years' association with the catering service in Parliament House. The Minister of Justice <Mr T. C. Webb) prj‘ sided at an official farewell to Mr Staden yesterday afternoon, and presented him with a wallet. Mr H. RRump will succeed Mr Staden as head waiter.—(P.A.)

Mr J. T. Carr, of Wellington, until recently the Grand Secretary of the Hibernian Society of New Zealand, returned to Harewood by Skymaster yesterday. He was the only New Zealand delegate to the triennial conference of the Australasian Catholic Benefit Society at Brisbane. He also attended the Eucharistic Congress in Sydney.

The appointment of Mr F. S. Allen as registrar of marriages for the district of Amuri at Hanmer, and registrar of births and deaths at Hanmer is 'notified in the latest Gazette.
