Jon Rosa and Song of India will not fulfil their engagements in the Wairarapa Steeplechase at- the Masterton winter meeting tomorrow, and Snow Saint has been withdrawn from the Stewards' Handicap, the second leg of the double. The first leg is the President's Handicap. The weather has been fine, and, though the forecast is for showers late tomorrow, the track should be in good winter order. WEST COAST MEETINGS

DATES TO BE REFERRED TO CONFERENCE

The West Coast racing clubs have made only minor changes in the dates on which they propose to race in the new season. Subject to the approval of the annual meeting of the New Zealand Racing Conference. the Grfiymouth Jockey Club will adhere to the dates on which it was permitted to race during this season. The Greymouth District Committee, at a meeting this week, recommended for approval dates sought by the clubs as follows : Greymouth Jockey Club: August 29, November 28 and 30, January 1 and 2. Reefton Jockey Club: September 5, May 1 and 3.

Westland Racing Club: December 5 and 7, February 13. Westport Jockey Club: October 10 and 12.

Kumara Racing Club: January 9. The following applications for renewals of trainers’ licences were recommended: Hari) Wa sh <Kaiata > anrf G - Rowley (Hari An application for a renewal of an apprentice jockey's licence by J. W. Meikle (Kaiata) was also recommended.

MR F. A. JARRETT NEW C.J.C. HANDICAPPER

MR H. V. SPICER APPOINTED JUDGE

Mr F. A. Jarrett has been appointed handicapper to the Canterbury Jockey Club In succession to Mr W. P. Russell, who resigned from the position recently. Mr Jarrett's first duties as handicapper will be for the club's Grand National meeting in August. Mr Jarrett previously held the posiU on <, ? £ judge for the club . and Mr H. V. Spicer has been appointed to succeed him.

PRESENTATIONS MADE TO MR W. R. MAIN

Mr W. R. Main, who has retired from the position of racecourse manager at Rlccarton, was presented with a writing desk and a cheque by members of the committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club at a function held in his honour this week.

The chairman, Mr G. H. Grigg, paid tribute to the excellent service Mr Main had given the club during the last 16 years. Mr Main would be leaving with the goodwill of all sections of the racing community, and particularly the Canter bury Jockey Club, he said. Other speakers were Messrs A. S. Elworthy and D. W. J. Gould.

The staff of the Canterbury Jockey Club met Mr Main at the racecourse yesterday afternoon, and presented him with a _ set of crystal glassware. The secretary (Mr F. T. H. Bell), the totalisator engineer (Mr R. T. Watkinson), and other members of the staff paid tribute to Mr Main’s service.

ARGENTINE RACING TO BE NATIONALISED

fN.Z.P.A.—Reuter— Copyright) BUENOS AIRES. May 21. The Government announced today that it planned to nationalise Argentine race tracks, bookmaking, and allied activities. The first step in this direction was the introduction of a bill which would give Hie Government control of properties of the Jockey Club, whose building was burned out In the disturbances last month. Ultimately, the Government plans to place all of the country’s tracks, totalisator machines, and off-track betting establishments under the control of the Treasury. Proceeds will go to "social aid."
