Trotting CANTERBURY PARK CLUB

Franquin Favoured To

Beat Trotters CHANCE FOR REAL GLOBE IN SPRINT Franquin, which has had three wins and six placings from 13 starts this season for £1193 15s in stakes, is expected to race well in the Holmes Handicap, the main race for trotters at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s winter meeting at Addington today. The Desmond’s Pride gelding will be better suited by the firm going expected today than he was when he finished fourth in his race at Epsom q fortnight ago on a heavy track. An aged gelding by Desmond’s Pride from Ruth Worthy, the dam also of Desworthy, a good winner a few seasons ago, Franquin is owned by Messrs S. Churchill and O. Fogarty, and trained at Temuka by R. D. Teahen. His last win was at a Canterbury Park meeting on February 14, when he beat Deportment in the Holmes Handicap, the same name as that for the race today. Franquin has stamina and he should do well today.

The former Southland trotter, Battle Royal, which has disappointed in his previous races in Canterbury, may show up. He looks handily placed on the front mark and this will be in his favour. At his most recent appearance he finished a fair second to the brilliant Battle Cry at Timaru on March 14. He will only need to trot solidly to be placed today.

Quite Soon, a member of G. Cameron’s New Brighton team, is overdue for a win. He is usually most reliable and can be expected to race prominently. In 15 starts this season the Quite Sure gelding has had four wins and four placings. He has taken a long time to become solid, but the patient policy adopted with him looks as though it will be most profitable later on.

Quendon, a member of C. S. Donald’s team, has not raced for some time, but if he is near his best he will have prospects, as will Quick Silver.

The consistent Springfield Globe Hare, Real Globe, will be at restricted odds in the Final Handicap. She has taken time to become solid, but in 17 starts this season she has had four wins and seven placings for £1940 in stakes. At her most recent appearance she showed great gameness under pressure to finish second to Brucus, beaten by half a length, in the Royal Handicap at Forbury Park on May 2. In that race Real Globe made all the pace and fought back well. It made a good horse in Brucus, the early favourite for the main handicap today, do his best to beat her in the last 100 yards. If Real Globe is allowed to make her own rules in front today, she will be hard to beat. The Methven-owned and trained Knightmare finished a good third to Brucus and Real Globe and she will again have to be respected. The Gallant Knight mare has a fair measure of ability, partictdarly over sprint distances.

Roschana, which has little in the way of form to recommend her, has raced well enough in recent weeks to suggest an early return to the winning list. The U. Scott mare often runs her best races out in front. She looks handily placed in today’s race and may show to advantage. Interest will be taken in the performance of the former Southland pacer, Girl Black, which will be having her first start since joining L. C. Frost’s team at New Brighton. If she is at her best and begins shUttly, she. will take beating as therg; are few more likely improvers about than this daughter of U. Scott and Moko Child. There is plenty of room for a surprise here and if there is to be one it may come from Countermark, Diamed, Senate or Gay Lyric. The Main Races Brucus, winner of his two most recent races, will probably be favourite for the Winter Handicap, the main race. The Jack Potts stallion will not find his task so easy in this company, but it is expected that be will come through with honours. If Maori Queen has taken no harm from her race at Auckland a fortnight ago, she will have to be considered. The Grattan Loyal mare, unlike most of her sire’s progeny, prefers firm going, and she will have conditions to her liking today. If she races with the same dash as she did at Addington at Easter, she will go close to winning. Adorian, White Angel, Lahore and Fallacy are selected to do best of the others. Favouritism in the Juvenile Handicap will probably be disputed by Buccaneer, Grand Monarch. Santa Amada, and Scottish Brigade. If these four race up to their best performances, they should dispute the finish. Buccaneer win only need to reproduce his brilliant trial of last Monday, when he recorded 2min 48 3-seec for the mile and a quarter after racing 12 feet out from the fence an the way, to win. Final Glow, third in the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes. Young Wexford and Dundonald are expected to offer most opposition to the four horses mentioned above. Battleground will be one of the favourites for the first leg of the double, the Fendalton Handicap. If he begins well, he should win his fourth race for the season. Brave Company and Bendemeer Stream, both of which have shown considerable promise. Magellan, Bar Tender and Kapeon may be the hardest for him to beat. Waihi Princess, a stablemate of Bendemeer Stream, will probably be favourite for the second leg of the double, the Ellesmere Handicap, in which the prospects of Rosy Morn, Errol’s Bal, Chance, Magician and Dillon d’Oro are also highly regarded Horses id this race will be handled by probationary horsemen.

Selections are:— Addington Handicap: General Lee, Branford, Executive.

Juvenile Handicap: Buccaneer, Grand Monarch bracket, Santa Amada. Feiidaiton Handicap: Battleground. Brave Company, Bendemeer Stream.

AUCKLAND CLUB

“Th. Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, May 22. There has been good drying in Auckland during the last few days, and the going should be reasonably firm for the final day of the Auckland Trotting Club's winter meeting at Epsom tomorrow. After the postponement last Saturday a number of horses, including many from the South Island, returned home, but the fields are still of good strength and the standard of racing should be high. The double will be run on the Mark Memorial Handicap and the May Handi-

OTAKI CLUB

A strong contingent of southern horses will add interest to proceedings at the Otakl Trotting Club’s meeting today. Lucky Scholar, which showed useful form on the Hawera-Awapuni circuit last month, is entitled to be one of the favourites for the Otaki Trotting Cup, the main race and first leg of the double. Most opposition to him may come from Marionette, Cherokee, Chipping Warden, and Belair.

The second leg will be run on the Castlehill Handicap in which Elaborator may be favourite. He has had five successive pladngs and is long overdue for a win. Unique Wonder, Stymie, Belcar, and Royal Charge are others with bright prospects. The track will probably be cutting out after the rain early in the week. Selections are:— 11 a.m.—Rahui Handicap: First division: Grey Towers. Bounden Duty, Loma Lu. Second division: Warrior, Rhapsody, Icicle Lad. 11.46 a.m.—WaitohuHandicap: Elaborator, Pablo.
