ENGINEERS’ ESCAPE FROM DEATH

LEAKAGE OF GAS (From Our Own Reporter) „ „ TIMARU, May 22. Messrs G. Edmonds and G. H. Hern, Christchurch refrigeration engineers who have been working on a repair job at the Timaru ice-skating rink, had a narrow escape from death recently when methyl chloride gas leaked from a pipe. Mr Edmonds noticed the escape of the gas first and he immediately went to turn off the valve controlling its release, but was overcome while making the attempt. Mr Hern noticed his collapse and dragged him to safety, though he was himself nearly overcome by the gas. Both men had recovered today.
