OATIS DENIES SPYING
(Rec. 8.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, May 20. The American Associated Press correspondent, William Oatis, said tonight that he never spied for the United States Embassy in Czechoslovakia. He said in a statement that he checked news tips he received with the United States Embassy on occasions, and he added: “But at no time did I act as an espionage agent of the embassy in the sense that this term is understood in Western countries within the range of my experience.”
Oatis returned to New York on Monday after 25 months in a Czechoslovakian prison, after his conviction for espionage. At a press conference on his arrival. Oatis refused to say whether he had served the United States Government in any capacity while he was Associated Press correspondent in Prague.
Fire Razes Glasgow Theatre.— Fire today destroyed Glasgow’s Lyric Theatre, the scene of many premieres by famous playwrights, including Shaw and Ibsen.—London, May 20.
