COUNTY RATES IN HALSWELL
GENERAL LEVY OF ip IN £ PROPOSED ESTIMATES SUBMITTED TO COUNCIL
Estimates of the Halswell County Council’s expenditure for 1953-54 total £26.047. To cover the expenditure, £981'3 in addition to the council’s present income of £16,234 will be required. The total rateable value of property in the county is £1,674,170, and to raise the required sum, a general rate of IJd in the £ is proposed.
The chairman of the council (Mr J. MacKenzie) said at a meeting yesterday that he would move the adoption of the estimates at an extraordinary general meeting of the council next month. In addition to the general rare, separate rates of Jd in the £ in Class A. 3-8 d in the £ in' Class B, and in the £ in Class C will be levied, on the capital value of all property in the Halswell drainage area. The estimates provide for an expenditure of £3500 on administration; £2lOB for the "South Canterbury Hospital Boards levy; £5004 for the re-‘< newal of Rainey’s bridge, Tai Tapu; £3500 for the renewal of the Sparks road bridge; £4OOO for roads and footpaths; £llOO for rivers and drains; and £2615 for new roads. Plant maintenance and replacements are set at £2000; miscellaneous expenditure and contingencies are assessed at £2300; main highways maintenance at '£27o; street lighting at £250; and rubbish removal at £5OO.
