TROTTING CANTERBURY PARK MEETING

Brucus Expected To Win Main Race BUCCANEER SELECTED IN JUVENILE HANDICAP Brucns is expected to win his third successive race in the Winter Handicap, the main race at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s winter meeting at Addingon tomorrow. The Jack Potts five-year-old will be having his most serious test to date, but he showed that he would be well up to this class when he won twice at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s recent meeting. In his races at Dunedin Brucus showed great gameness and he should be well suited by tomorrow’s race of one mile and five furlongs. He is one of the most improved pacers seen out this season. He has had six wins and five placings from 21 starts. He has stood up well to a lot of racing. He will probably be favourite tomorrow. Most opposition to Brucus may come from the Grattan Loyal mare, Maori Queen. She will have to begin smartly to have a chance of overcoming her handicap of 24 yards. She showed brilliant speed when she won twice at the Addington Easter meeting, and, if she reproduces those efforts, she should be placed. Adorian, which raced from awkward marks over sprint distances at the Forbury Park meeting, will have a chance over this distance. He is usually a brilliant beginner, and his handicap of 36 yards should not worry him. Adorian is well up to the best classes, and he could easily win.

White Angel, which shares the same mark as Adorian. raced well without much luck at Forbury Park. The Light Brigade mare is right back to her best, and over this distance she will have to be respected. Lahore ran useful races at Dunedin, and he seems to be on the way to good form. The half-brother to Parawa Derby will not be favoured by his handicap of 24 yards, but he should be placed. Interest will be taken in the performance of last season's leading three-year-old, Fallacy, which has had only one start so far this season. If Fallacy is at his best, he will take beating, and it will not surprise if he wins. The Pukekohe-trained Woodstock has compiled a useful record in the North Island, but it is difficult to see him winning here. Duncraig will be handily placed on 12 yards, and he may show up. However, the chances of Brucus, Maori Queen and Adorian are more highly regarded. Buccaneer, winner of the Timaru Nursery Stakes, is expected to extend his record in the Juvenile Handicap. He recorded an outstanding effort when he won his heat of the two-year-old parade at the Addington trials last Monday. A repetition would make him the hardest to beat.

C. R. Berkett Well Represented The Templeton trainer, C. R. Berkett, will be well represented by Grand Monarch, Scotch Girl, and Sue Scott in the Juvenile Handicap. Grand Monarch, after a good race in the New Zealand Welcome Stakes, finished second to Lynberne in the Oamaru Stakes on May 9. He should develop worthwhile form, and will need only to begin smartly tomorrow to take part in the finish. Scotch Girl may do the better of Berkett's other two candidates.

The promising Santa Amada recorded a good trial at Addington last Monday, and she will be hard to beat. She appears to have become more solid. She has been placed at her two appearances to date, and is due for a win.

Final Glow finished on strongly for third in the Oamaru classic, and the Josedale Grattan filly should be improved by that race. She may show up. Scottish Brigade will be one of the favourites for the race. He will not bet set an easy task from 12 yards, but should be prominent. He won his heat at the trials, and is likely to be fit. Dundonald, which performed well at the trials earlier in the week, is expected to show to advantage. So should Young Wexford, which finished a good second to Buccaneer in his heat. The others do not make much appeal, and the best of them may be Stylish Linda. The Doubles Races Betting wiil cover a wide range in the Fendalton Handicap, the first leg of the double, which has drawn a strong;field of improving pacers. Battleground, which has had three wins and one placing in his four most recent appearances, will be handily placed on the front mark. If he begins as well as usual, he should win. Battleground has always shown more than average ability, and he should graduate to the best classes for ris Dunedin owner, Mr C. B. Foon. Brave Company, an impressive winner over two miles at Oamaru early in the month, is one of the most promising young pacers in commission, but he may find it difficult to concede 24 yards to Battleground. He will have excellent prospects of being placed. Bendemeer Stream, which is also on 24 yards, has raced well in recent weeks, and she should be prominent. In 11 starts this season, she has had three wins and five placings. She will need only to receive a favourable run to win. Magellan is a smart three-year-old. If he races up to his best form, he will have bright prospects. Bar Tender, Brava, and Kapeen are others expected to show up. Waihi Princess, a convincing winner at Methven last month, will probably be favourite for the Ellesmere Handicap, the second leg of the double. The Casanova mare is a good stayer, and in this comparatively weak field she should race well again. She will be bracketed with Tiki Napu, which has also shown useful form in recent weeks. Rosy Morn, which returned from Auckland on Monday, may be the hardest for Waihi Princess to beat. The half-sister to Red Chase has shown more than useful form this season, and will need only a favourable run to be placed. Errol's Pal has shown that he is near his best, and he may show up. Bonnie Opal, Magician, Chance, and Dillon d'Oro are also expected to race well. Real Globe in Form Real Globe, runner-up to Brucus in the Royal Handicap at Forbury Park on May 2, is the form horse in the. Final Handicap. The Springfield Globe mare is very fit. and it is difficult to see her beaten. Knightmare, which ran two sterling races at Forbury Park, is overdue for another win. The Gallant Knight mare seldom runs a bad race. Roschana has run useful races in recent weeks, and the sprint distance tomorrow should suit her admirably. Girl Black, which will be having her first start since being trained by L. C. Frost, Gay Lyric, Senate, Vivanti, and Countermark make most appeal of the others. Fearless Peter and Lodestar will probably dispute favouritism for the Peninsula Handicap. Fearless Peter is expected to show more improvement than Lodestar, and he may gam an overdue win. Lodestar showed more than average ability when he won recently at Amberley. The half-brother to Riviera should develop worthwhile form. Young Sam, which was not at his best for his engagement at Meth ven last month, has had a chance to freshen up, and he should race prominently. Lauder Lass, a place-getter at Forbury Park. Christmas Spirit, and Super Mission should race best of the others, out their chances of beating Fearless Peter or Lodestar do not look very bright. The Trotters Franquin, which finished fourth in his race at Epsom a fortnight ago, is selected to win the Holmes Handicap. Franquin has shown much-improved form this season, a feature of his performance being his strong finishing run. Battle Royal will be better placed on the front mark tomorrow than he has been for some time, and he should make a bold showing. Quite Soon, a failure at his most recent appearance, had previously been most consistent, and he may make amends tomorrow. He has a fair measure of ability. Others likely to show up include Madam Grattan, Quendon, and Concord. General Lee will have excellent prospects of scoring his first win for the season in the Addington Handicap. The Light Brigade gelding is trotting better now than earlier in the season, and, if the track is firm, it is difficult to see him beaten. Branford, which has been placed twice in as many starts. Executive, Kevin, Kowhai, Dauphine, and Nelson Hall should do best of the others. Laureldale for Sydney g Laureldale was scratched at 9 a.m. yesterday for the Mark Memorial Handicap at Epsom tomorrow. He was expected to leave Wellington yesterday by sea for Sydney, where he is to contest the Coronation Cup at Harold Park on June 2. (PA.) Otaki Scratchings

Scratchings posted for the Otaki meeting are Courser and Galladora from the President’s Handicap, and Loma Lu from the Rahul and Stewards’ Handicaps. May Logan, 12 yards, is an additional acceptor in the Te Horo Handicap, and Warrior, scratch, is in the first division of the Stewards' Handicap.—(P.A.)

Selection of Fields . After withdrawals had been taken, the fields exceeded the safety limit in the Addington, Juvenile, and Fendalton- Handicaps at the Canterbury Park meeting tomorrow. The committee held a ballot for the Addington and Fendalton Handicaps and, after selecting a number of horses to start in the Juvenile Handicap, held a ballot among the rest of the field.
