Improvement In N.Z. Finances FOUR MONTHS’ FIGURES (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 21, In overseas exchange transactions last month New Zealand had a surplus of £10,463,000, according to figures issued today by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. In April last year there was a deficit of £1,963,000. For the first four months of this year there was a surplus of £36,786,000, compared with a deficit of £10,184,000 for the corresponding period last year. Receipts last month totalled £27,196,800, compared with £22,175,000 last year. Among the exports were:— butter, £5,538,0)0 (£3,000,000 last year); cheese, £1,569,000 (£979,000); meat, £4.181,000 (£4,212,000); wool, £10,900,000 (£7,787,000). Other items totalled £3,318,000 (£2,988,000). Payments for the month totalled £16,733,000, compared with £24.138,000 a year ago. Payments for the four months reached £77,113,000, compared with £111,206,000 last year. The main items among the payments were:— Government imports, £1,874,000 (£2,495,000 last year): private imports, £11,886,000 (£19,209,000). Other payments were £2,158,000 (£2,995,000). Among the totals of receipts for the four months of this year were:—butter, £21,244,000 (£18,865,000 last year); meat, £20,672,000 (£11,936,000); wool, £10,900,000 (£7,787,000). The total export receipts for the four months were £106,098,000, compared with £88,390,000 a year ago. Overseas exchange transactions last month are given as follows: Receipts. Exports: butter, £5,538,112; cheese, £1,569,389; meat, £4,180,924; wool, £10.900,419; other, £3,317.708. Other receipts: £1,888,996. Total, £27,195,548.

Payments.—Government payments: debt interest £236.627; imports, £1,873,934: other, £577,494. Private imports: £11,886,395. All other payments: £2,158,382. Total, £16,732,832. This leaves a surplus of £10,462,716.
