EAST GERMANY’S ARMY

BONN. April 16. The United States High Commission reported today that Communist East Germany had 120,000. men under arms on March 1 this year. In addition. 25,000 men were in paramilitary organisations like the Border Police and the Transport Police. About 400,000 young people were enrolled in the “Society for Sport and Technical Training,” which the High Commissioner considered a preliminary training organisation. The High Commission statement said: “Of 120,000 actually under arms, 5000 are in the Soviet Zone Air Force and 5000 in the embryo navy. The remaining 110,000 are members of ground forces, the so-called People’s Police in barracks.

“Forces in being include two infantry divisions, one armoured division supplied with Soviet heavy equipment, artillery and tanks. These forces, comprising about 50,000 men, are organised as an army group in the north. “The remaining army men are organised in 17 non-integrated units of about 3500 men each located at various points in the Soviet Zone.”
