The election is regarded as a triumph for Dr. Malan’s racial policy. Dr. Malan is expected to act quickly on Parliament’s clash with the Courts last year on the main issue of the voting rights of people of mixed race. An early piece of legislation is expected to be a bill to lower the voting age from 21 to 18. The Nationalists say 18-year-olds are entitled to vote as well as fight for their country, but their opponents suspect they are seeking the advantage of fresh age groups of Afrikaner youth in the electorate.
