SALARIES OF TEACHERS
NEGOTIATIONS FOR NEW ORDER
Preparation of claims for a new principal salary order is now being undertaken by the Dominion executive of the New Zealand Educational Institute, which hopes to obtain substantial agreement in conciliation with the Education Department before deciding whether to apply for a tribunal hearing. Disturbance of the structure of the salary pattern approved last year as a result of the inquiry into the promotion and grading of teachers is being avoided. The executive, in a report to members, says that many representations from branches for changes in the principal order had to be rejected because they involved radical alterations to the new pattern, or sought to restore features of old scales that were “traded in.”
Alleged defects and anomalies which the executive has considered include the salaries for teachers’ college viceprincipals, lecturers, assistant lecturers, librarians, physical education lecturers, and museum officers and their assistants, , headmasters of district high schools; and positions of responsibility in intermediate schools and some specialist services.
