OBITUARY
DR. R. N. GUTHRIE Dr. Robert Neil Guthrie, a wellknown radiologist in Christchurch, died recently. A son of the late Dr. John Guthrie, he was born in Christchurch in 1882. After attending the Christchurch Boys’ High School, ne went to Edinburgh with his parents, and there studied medicine. Dr. Guthrie returned to Christchurch in 1909. On the outbreak of war in 1914, Dr. Guthrie volunteered for service with the Main Body of the Ist N.Z.E.F., and was appointed medical officer to the Canterbury Mounted Rifles. He was wounded three times on Gallipoli. He was awarded the Military Cross and mentioned in dispatches. He later served in France with Field Ambulance units until he was transferred to headquarters in England with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. At the end of the First World War, Dr. Guthrie returned to New Zealand for a short time before going to London to study radiology. He returned to New Zealand ip 1922, and was appointed radiologist to the Christchurch Public Hospital, a post which he held until he retired in 1948. Dr. Guthrie is survived by his widow and one son, Mr I. Guthrie. MR IL E. LAWRENCE Mr Herbert Edward Lawrence, who died at Stratford recently at the age of 85, was still practising as a solicitor at the time of his death and he played tennis until ne was in his eightieth year. He was keenly interested in community affairs and for several years was a member of the Stratford Borough Council. In 1926 at the age of 58 and in 1935 at the age 'of 67 he shared the men’s doubles championships of the Stratford Tennis Club. He w r as one of the strongest supporters of tennis in central Taranaki and was instrumental in starting the Petrie Shield competition which has since developed into two major competitions with entries from all tennis clubs in central Taranaki. He was a member of the Stratford club for at least 30 years and at the time of his death he was a life member and also still an executive officer of the club.
Mr Lawrence is survived by three sons—Messrs G. Lawrence (Blenheim), K. Lawrence (Christchurch), and M. Lawrence —and three daughters—Mesdames T. Beveridge Davis (Christchurch), and C. Faull (Stratford), and Miss K. Lawrence (Stratford).
