WEST’S ARMED STRENGTH
MR MAYER URGES MAINTENANCE WASHINGTON,, April 6. The French Prime Minister (Mr Rene Mayer) said in .an interview published by the magazine U.S News and World Report” today,, that the Soviet leaders would remain quiet and polite as long as they respected the military strength of the Western alliance of free nations. . He added that war might develop if the Western nations relaxed their defence efforts as a result of the communist peace propaganda. “The differences in the forces between East and West is such that m any case we must continue our rearmament effort,” he said. “A sustained effort will be necessary. If we can convince nubile opinion of this necessity then, in my opinion, there will be no war. If. on the other hand, people lose the feeling that an imminent peril exists, and relax their efforts, then the door may be opened to war. Mr Mayer also said that unless the United States provided more aid for France to carry on the Indo-China war against the Communists, France could not increase her European defence commitments.
