Mr E. Mervyn Taylor Given Award NOTED WOOD ENGRAVER (New Zeaiana Press A44PPi<iwuni WELLINGTON, May 11. Mr E. Mervyn Taylor, who is noted throughout New Zealand for his wood engravings, has been awarded the £lOOO scholarship offered each year by the Association of New Zealand Art Societies. Mr Taylor will study Polynesian mythology, and from this study will produce an extensive series of wood engravings. He will study Maori myths and legends, carving and artifacts. He will be advised by officers of the Maori Affairs Department. He plass.to spend a considerable time in Maori communities to make drawings from life. The association, announcing the award to-day, said that these researches and studies would fit Mr Taylor to begin his engraved illustrations. These would ultimately be available to the public. The scholarship, which is tenable for two years, is offered to mature artists who jjy their ability, achievement, application, and promise show that they are capable of further development. The revised conditions for the 1952 award make it tenable in New Zealand as well as overseas.
Four permanent collections of Mr Taylor’s work have been bought. A collection of hi? wood engravings was published in 1946, and a further collection will be published this year. His engravings illustrate several New Zealand books. A panel of eight judges at the National Gallery last considered the works of all competitors. The award to Mr Taylor was unanimously approved.
