MINOR FLOODING ON WEST COAST
3.38 INCHES OF RAIN IN 48 HOURS ROADS TO CANTERBURY STILL OPEN fFrqm Du* Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, May 11. Rivers and creeks in most parts of the West Coast were swollen to near flood level by the very heavy rain wh|ch fell from Friday night until early this morning. Surface flooding in scape parts maoe roads, particularly side roads, almost impassable, but apart from the regular erosion in the principal rivers there was no apparent damage done. Motorists had to exercise care on the GreymouthrKunanga main highway between the Camp bridge ana the flaxmil}, while a stretch of tne Kotuku-Aratika road was alsp covered. No serious slips or washopts have been reported and all routes, including tfle Lewis Pass and the Qtira Gorge, are open. There was a strong flood, approaching eight knots, in tfle Grey river and the two colliers in port took the usual precaution of using extra mooring lines. Altogether 3.38 inches of rain fell in the 48 hours up to 9 o’clock this morning. A total of 1.11 inches fell in the fil'st 24 hours of this period, and 2.27 in the second 24 hours. The total rainfall for the year is now 34.59 inches.
