(Rec. 9 p.m.) NEW YORK, December 29. The United States is reported to have urged Britain to recognise King Farouk as the ruler of the Sudan, savs the Associated Press. J This is part of a plan to settle Western differences with Egypt and Mr Churchill is believed to be ready to American suggestion when he visits the United States. According to responsible officials, the State Department suggested that Britain should join in sponsoring a ‘‘package deal” for Egypt late in January. Under this the Egyptian Government would be given sovereignty over the Sudan. In return for this concession the United States would expect the Egyptian Government first, to agree in principle to join the American-backed Middle East Defence Command, and second, to consent to hold a plebiscite in the Sudan to determine the wish of the Sudanese as to their political future. The proposals are designed mainly to put new strencHh behind the Middle East Command idea. After Egypt’s refusal all Arab Governments refused to join the command.
