AUSTRALIA TO ANTARCTICA
FLIGHT MAY BE MADE NJEXT YEAR
(TIJt. Press Association—Copvright) SYDNEY, October 22. The Minister of External Affairs <Mr R. G. Casey) said last night that the Federal Government had asked Captain P. G. Taylor to undertake the first flight from Australia to the Antarctic mainland. ■ The Minister said the flight would be made in January if certain mechanical difficulties were overcome. “The first hop would be from Hobart to Macquarie Island, and the second to Adelie Land, where the French have a station,” he said. “A successful flight would teach us a great deal about Pplar navigation, and how best to send relief, if needed, to our Antarctic bases. Later we could make an air survey of the Australian sector. Such a flight would reinforce our claim to about one-third of the Antarctic Continent”
