Lake Wakatipu Steamers

“The loss on the steamer services decreased through an increase of tourist traffic, the introduction of Sunday excursions on the lake, and the increase in goods and parcels rates as from May 15, 1950,” stated the annual report of the former General Manager of the Railways Department (Mr F. W. Aickin), tabled in the House of Representatives. These factors were more than sufficient to cover an increase in expenditure due mainly to higher wage rates and higher coal prices, though they did not enable the steamer service to return a surplus, he said.—(F.O.O.R.).
