PRIVACY IN VOTING
Sir,—On going to a small country school to vote in the present election I was not provided with any screens. 1 always understood this was very necessary, as it was a secret vote. Sitting down at a school desk to vote, I was in full view of the scrutineers and anyone who came in, or cared to look through windows. Why was this allowed?—Yours, etc., ELECTOR. September 12, ISSI. [When this letter was referred to him, the returning officer for the Ashburton electorate (Mr W. Haymes) said the complaint in the first place should have been made to the deputy in charge of the booth at the time of voting or to the returning officer.]
