STATEMENT BY AUDITOR-

GENERAL

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 31. in the first paragraph of a newspaper report published on August 29 °i maet *ng of the electoral college of the Meat Producers' Board, it was stated that a Crown Law Office opinion had meant that payments running into millions of pounds, made for subsidies out of the Meat Industry Stabilisation Account, must be considered to have been illegal, and also that validating legislation at the next session of Parliament will be necessary to put them in order. -

This information was given to the college by the board’s chairman (Mr G. H. Gngg).

The Controller and Auditor-General has asked the Press Association to state that he has assured himself that no such opinion has been given.
