N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS AT MASTERTON

The biggest upset in New Ze land table tennis fbr years was provided by a young Canterbury player, Miss J. M. Williamson. when she beat the title-holder, Miss M. M. Hoar (Wairarapa) in three straight sets in the final of the New Zealand women’s singles at Mastertcn to-night. Miss Williamson decisively beat Miss Hoar, who had been the champion since 1948. Miss Williamson also won the under 18 championship singles. The final of the men’s championship singles was keenly contested by R. A. Algie (Auckland) and R. W. Jackson (Auckland). Algie, a former title-holder, beat Jackson, who won the title at the last championship tournament. Results:—

Men’s Open Singles Championship.— Semi-finals: R. A. Algie (Auckland) beat K. F Dwyer (Auckland). 21-17. 21-19, 21-10: R. W. Jackson (Auckland) beat W. O Jaine (Auckland), 21-15, 21-15, 22-20. Final: Algie beat Jackson, 21-18, 9-21, 21-19.

Women's Championship Singles.—Final Miss J M. Williamson (Canterbury) beat Miss M M. Hoar (Wairarapa), 21-11, 21-18. 21-18. k

Girls’ Championship Doubles, under 18.—Final: Misses J. Wiliamson and V. M. Idle (Canterbury) beat Misses Pat and Pam Bassett (Wairarapa). 21-14, 21-12. Girls’ Championship* Singles, under 16.—Final: H. M Dykes (Wellington) beat D McLean (Bush). 21-11. 21-10. Combined Championship Doubles, under 18.—Final H. Dunn (Wellington) and Miss J. Williamson (Canterbury) beat R S. Sandilands and Miss M. J. Garden (Hutt Valley), 21-12, 21-11. Boys’ Championship Singles, under 18.—Final: R. S. Sandilands (Hutt Valley) beat J. Armstrong (Canterbury), 21-15. 21-13, 21-23. 21-19.

Combined Championship Doubles Semi-finals- R V Jackson and Miss B Williamson beat H Chapman <Wel'inP ton) and Miss E. Macneil (Hutt Valley! 21-19 21-19. 21-19: O Jaine (Au-kland 1 and Miss M. Hoar (Wairarapa) beat L. B Mussen and Miss T. Culling, 21-16. 21-16. 21-16.
