REARMING BY GERMANY
Dr. Adenauer’s Price
(Rec. 8 pjm.) LONDON, August 30. The West German Chancellor (Dr. Konrad Adenauer) has demanded more money from America and political concessions from Britain and France as the price for supplying 12 divisions to the West, says the Bonn correspondent of the “Daily Express." In seven hours in Bonn yesterday, President Truman’s special envoy (Mr Averell Harriman) learned that the 250,000 strong West German Army, which Americans want started by Christmas, will cost £2 000,000,000 to organise, arm and equip. Millions more will be added to the
bill by 2000 jet fighters and bombers. Germany expects America to pay for most of that. Mr Harriman talked with Dr, Adenauer for two and a half hours and left Bonn last night for Washington with the terms in his briefcase.
The “Big Three” Foreign Ministers, Mr Acheson, Mr Morrison, and Mr Schuman, will decide after the Japanese peace conference whether the terms can be accepted.
