SYDENHAM WINS CHAMPIONSHIP

Sydenham and Selwyn, who finished the fourteenth round of competition games witt points even, played off in the final to decide the hockey championship on Saturday. Sydenham won by three goals in a fast, even tussle, which produced plenty of exciting moments. Little Interest was taken in the other two senior games. Technical drew with Old Boys 2-aU. and Wookton beat Harewood 2-1. SYDENHAM v. SELWYN

Sydenham had two replacements, as L Smith and R. Morten were not available M. Hall and H. Rhind filled the gape, and the team was in no way weakened. The game started at a fast clip, with Sydenham staging some solid raids which daxept Maister well in the limelight to kick Selwyn had the misfortune to lose J. Donkin through an injury, his place being fiffed by & Grade. The Sydenham - forwards combined splendidly, and Cum- , mins went down on the right and switched the play across to Brownlie, who was up to connect and net with a great shot. Sdwyn’s two wingers, Biltcliff and Hart, put in some good runs, but the Hall brothers made up a solid defence to keep Sydenham’s goal clear. R. Peacock played a brilliant game throughout, but had a tendency to feed the left, where Brownlie gave of his best and justly earned a place in the Canterbury side. A right wing attack led by Smith and Cummins had Selwyn’s defence shattered, and Fergus finished off with a clever move with a flick shot into goal. Fergus at centre and Cumberpatch were imparting a sting into Sydenham's raids, but in spite of several attempts half-time came Witt the score: Sydenham 2, Selwyn 0. Selwyn had the better of the first part of the second half, but pyer-eagerness in the circle lost several chances. Sydenham’s defence was tegacious, and two penalty bullies for bi itches by M. Hall and H. Rhind were ta 1 - i and successfully defended. Reece, A. uson, and Hart led raid after raid on Syaenham*s goal, but the halves and backs worked sblldly together to prevent a score. Ute Sydenham captain. W. Morris, objected to the use of a clean ball to replace a muddy one half-way through the second half. It is customary to use a third ball in important games, and as many as a dozen are sometimes used in a shield game. Morris’s objection, while strictly in accordance with the association's rule which states. "Each team shall provide one white ball," was somewhat contrary to custom.

Sydenham staged a late rally to Increase the score when Cummins accepted a pass from Brownlie and netted cleverly. The final score was: Sydenham 3. Selwyn 0 Dmpires: Messrs A. Ostler and B. W. Rogers. WOOLSTON v. HAREWOOD jWookton scored a narrow win oyer wet ground* Harewood had aßthe better of the play jptay to the ground conditions and making grXrtrfSS&XS tn the second half.
