WELLINGTON WINS BY TWO GOALS (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 36 Like most touring sports sides which niav on their return to their own country the New Zealand Universities hockey team played below its true form on its return from its Australian tour and was beaten by Wellington by 4 goals to 2 at Karori Park on Saturday. The teams we re evenly matched for much of the game, but Wellington had the little extra Jharpness which counts. The standard was good, but not as high as could be expected of teams with such good players. Universities lacked any effective combination, and this seems surprising after their tour. One of the main stumbling blocks was the substantial reaistance provided by the Wellington defence. and with the poor penetration of the Universities forwards it went far in bringing about their defeat. The Wellington forwards were little stronger, and if the Universities defence had been better the result could easily have been a trvK. Two players stood out in Wellington’s team. H. Englert’s performance earned him a position in the North Island team to play the South Island, and A Whitcher. a Petone player, showed promise in his first match in first-class company. G. Coates had plenty of work to do in the Universities’ goal and could not be blamed for missing the shots that went past him. Walter, O'Connor, and Sheaffer were worthy members of the Universities team. Sheaffer showed good defence. Scorers for Wellington were Tooby (2) and Tynan (2). For Universities O’Connor and Mann scored.
