WATERSIDERS’ UNION
“WELCOME TO PLACE . IN FEDERATION” COMMENT BY MR K. MCL. BAXTER (New Zealand Press Association) | WELLINGTON, Jan. 31. “Anyone who imagines that trade unionists are happy because the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union is outside the Federation of Labour is mistaken,” said the federation’s secretary (Mr K. McL. Baxter), replying to comment by the Canterbury Trades Council. “The watersiders are welcome to a place in the Federation of Labour, united to carry on the good work, but not while their union pursues a policy of abuse, disruption, and failure to conform to the general policy and democratic decisions of the federation as determined by the majority of workers’ representatives and their unions at annual conferences.
“The constitutional aspect of this matter will be determined by the annual conference and not by any one trades council.”
There were no further developments in the situation, and Mr Baxter said to-day that after to-morrow the affair would be in the hands of the annual Labour conference.
