THE GODLEY PLOT

Sir, —I agree with F. C. Archer that our Godley plot is in a shocking state. It might even be called the Godley blot. But I do not think that Mr Barnett’s solution—paving the area—is the best. Why not make a narrow garden bordering the grass? We in Christchurch respect gardens, and this would be a cheap and colourful way of affording the desired protection. As for the elderly folk who congregate there, I consider they have every right to do so. In their younger days they helped to develop our lovely city. Why should they not see and enjoy the fruits of their labours? Perhaps they are lonely, and gravitate to this spot for companionship. Instedd of complaining of their presence, we should provide suitable seating accommodation, on which they can rest in comfort and watch the world go by.— Yours, etc., January 31. 1950.
