PROGRAMME FOR BEAUMARIS

RACES AT TRENTHAM AND AWAPUNI

The Wellington Cup winner, Beaumaris, is to be kept in light exercise at Riccarton, and his next appearance will be to the New Zealand St. Leger at Trentham in March. The Beau Repaire colt has won £12,766 this season, which is £709 short of the record for one season, held by Tauloch. He will probably run in the Awapuni Gold Cup after the March meeting at Trentham and, if he is still short of Tauloch’s record, he may be taken to Ellerslie at Easter for the Great Northern St. Leger. Beaumaris has stood up to his racing in remarkable fashion. In the Trentham Stakes last Saturday he lost his handy trailing position about three furlongs from home when some of toe other runners moved from the back. Tudor Prince and Sweet Spray there gained an advantage of several lengths, and Beaumaris could not close the gap to them when he was pulled out from tjie rails. •

Back to Australia The Riccarton light-weight, Noel Eastwood, will leave Auckland on Friday for Australia, and he will join Lou Robertton’s powerful stable near Mentone. Eastwood, a son of Mrs C. G. Humphries, and step-son of the Riccarton trainer, brought distinction to New Zealand horsemen when he rode Lincoln to Victory in the C’.-ulfield Cup last year. His horsemanship in Australia impressed leading Australian jockeys and trainers. He returned to New Zealand shortly before the New Zealand Cup meeting in November, and on the last day of the jneeting rode Infatuate, winner of the Fendalton Handicap. He was on the leadtog three-year-old filly. Sweet Spray, when she ran second to Swanee in the Auckland Cup on Boxing Day. Signal Officer Fit

Signal Officer took no ill-effects from his two races at Trentham, and he worked keenly in company with Eulogize on the toial grass at Riccarton yesterday. The Salmagundi eight-year-old finished eighth in the Wellington Cup and tenth to the Wellington Racing Club Handicap the second day.

Showed Speed Airspeed, an Airway trained by J. Mitchell at Waimate, attracted some attention in the Sandown Hack Handicap at Hororata last Saturday. She was'not prominent at the start, but at the end of two furlongs she turned on a brilliant burst of speed, joining Silver Chase to head the pacemaker, Stagdance, near the half-mile. Airspeed faded out after running wide on the home turn, but she looks a likely sort to win races. Her dam, Aroarc, is by Arrowsmith, and comes from the Secret Link . family, which was noted for brilliant speed. Airspeed will remain at Riccarton this week for the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting.

Caught in Barrier Silver Chase made friends when he finished into second place in the Sandown Hack Handicap at the Hororata meeting. He was slow to get going, but with some reason; his rider, R. W. Gould carried away the barrier strand and he was hampered by it for about two furl°Once clear. Silver Chase showed speed to be one of the leaders at the end of another furlong. Though Tranbycroft beat him easily, there was merit in Silver Chase’s performance after his early setback. He may be on the way to much better form, as the progeny of his sire. Wild Chase, usually can be relied on to improve with age.

Overdue Win Chord won the Novice Stakes at the Hororata meeting in good style. His win was much overdue, for it was his thirtysecond appearance in a race. His breeding is interesting. He is by Tiderace, imported son of Fairway, while his dam. Choral, is closely related to Soneri, one of the best race mares in New Zealand in recent years. Overweights , x ... There was a tong list of overweights at the Hororata meeting last Saturday. Most of them were the usual cases of horses carrying a few pounds extra, but there were exceptions. Sir Gara, weighted at 9-0 in the high-weight, carried 10-sla, an excess of 19V 2 1b. But this was not the “cort “or the day—ln the Novice Stakes Twitter carried 11-3, or 431 b above the 8-2 which appeared in the book. The surprise was not r.rrat he attracted so httle support but that he was not even the outsider of the field.

Jumper in Work _ The jumper Colonel Smart is back in work at Riccarton under R. P. Register s direction. He was given strong pace work on the sand at Riccarton yesterday He may race at the Riverton Easter meeting where he won two hack steeplechases last year. He also won the Otago Steeplechase last season.
