CUSTOMS RETURNS

INCREASED COLLECTION AT CHRISTCHURCH Revenue collected by the Customs Department in Christchurch last month was £489,132, an increase of £93,078 on collections in January of last year. The figures for the 10 months ending January 31, 1950, with those for the corresponding period last year in parenthesis, are as follows:—customs and excise, £2,398.352 (£2,213-881); petrol tax. £332.564 (£296.589); tyres, £1770 (£15.622); sales tax, £1.455,548 (£1.356,171); light dues, £8247 (£6594); exnort levy, hides £57,113 (£79,717); miscellaneous, £4362 (£3934); totals. £4.257,956 (£3.972,508). AUCKLAND Customs revenue collected in Auckland in January totalled £954,247 against £684.344 in the corresponding month last year. The main items, with the corresponding figures for last year in parenthesis, were: customs, £503.248 (£338,590); petrol, £105.052 (£89,866); tyres, £319 (£1584); sales tax. £345,628 (£254.304). DUNEDIN Customs returns in Dunedin for January, with the figures for January, 1949 in parenthesis, are:—customs. £120,679 (£107.395); sales tax, £117.754 (£92,064): petrol tax. £18,909 (£18.197); tyres, £145 (£521). Total: £257.487 (£218,177). MINING Austral N.Z. Return.—The company’s latest return shows 4990 z of bullion for 147 hours in 14 days to January 28—(P.A.) Grey River.—The dredge return for the clean-up period January 10 to 24 was 1340 z of gold; from 121,000 yards, in 244 is hours.
