CANTERBURY’S CENTENARY

COMPLAINT BY ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

The opinion that the Canterbury centennial celebrations were not representing the whole of the province, because the country districts knew very little of the arrangements being made, was expressed at a meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council on Monday evening. The discussion took place after the council had received a copy of the programme for the centennial celebrations and a small booklet on Canterbury. It was the opinion of many councillors that it would be a good idea to hold an “Ashburton Day,” when persons should be encouraged to come to Ashburton.

The council decided to confer with the Ashburton County Council about representations in the centennial parades and other matters relating to the celebrations, and to refer the matter to the finance committee in the meantime.
