EDUCATION IN RELIGION
GOVERNMENT ATTITUDE OUTLINED
It was necessary to set out the Government's attitude to Christian education, said the Minister of Education (Mr T. H McCombs) last evening. This topic had been unnecessarily dragged into the political arena by some Nationalists, notably Mr F. W. Doidge, he said. In a recent letter to the New Zealand Council for Christian Education the Labour Government’s viewpoint was set out thus:— “The Labour Government recognises that instruction in the principles and ethics of Christianity is an important part of a child’s education and that provision should be made for it. We believe that this instruction is best given by those who feel that they have a vocation for it. On behalf of the Labour Government, I shall be pleased, if I have the opportunity, to discuss with your council and other interested bodies the means whereby a scheme acceptable to all can be devised. It would be necessary for such a scheme to provide for an agreed syllabus and also fOr the finding and training of suitable persons as instructors.”
