TENNIS TITLES IN N.S.W.
TWO N.Z. PLAYERS REACH FINALS MISSES E. BECROFT AND J. BURKE. (Rec 11 p.m.) SYDNEY, Nov. 24. The New Zealanders, Misses J. Burke and E. Becroft, reached two finals of events in the New Soutn Wales lawn tennis championships today. Misses Burke and Becroft exhibited splendid courtcraft and understanding in the semi-final of the girls’ doubles when they eliminated Misses Pam Southcombe dnd Carmel Bdrelli. Misses Southcombe and Borelli, rated as Australia’s best junior pair, recently won the Australian hard court doubles championship. Misses Burke and Becroft resisted all the wiles of their opponents; They led 5- in the first set, but lost the set 7-5. In the second set, the Victorians had a 3-0 lead, but the New Zealanders pulled up and won the set. In the third set they assumed mastery from the net and won easily. The outstanding player was Miss Becroft, whose all-round work was so sound that the Victorians endeavoured to divert the returns to Miss Burke. The latter, however, was certain, especially from the net. Earlier Miss Burke caused a surprise by eliminating Miss Moira Bleazard in the semi-final of the Women’s Plate, winning with the loss of three games. Miss Burke was consistent throughout and Miss Bleazard was ungble to produce the form which gave her a win over Miss Southcombe yesterday. Miss Becroft was beaten by Miss Beryl Penrose in the semi-final of the girls’ singles. Miss Becroft failed to gauge the wind in the first set and was badly out of touch. She regained control in the second set to lead 5-3; but she was unable to triumph over Miss Penrose’s soundness. Results:— Girls’ Singles.—Semi-final: Miss B. Penrose beat Miss E. Becroft. 6-0. 7-5. Girls’ Doubles.—Semi-final: Misses E. Becroft and J. Burke beat Misses P. Southcombe and C. Borelli. 5-7, 8-6, 6Mixed Doubles. Quarter-finals: Bromwich and Miss Fitch beat McGregor and Miss E. G. In the semi-final of the New South Wales men’s singles tennis championship, J. E. Bromwich defeated the national champion, Frank Sedgman. 6- 4-6. 6-2, 6-4.
