CHINESE MEMBERS OF U.N.
Soviet Recognition Withdrawn REPLY MADE BY NATIONALISTS (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, Nov. 23. The Soviet Foreign Minister (Mr A/ J. Vyshinsky) announced in the United Nations General Assembly to-day that Russia no longer recognised the Chinese Nationalist delegation as spokesmen for China in the United Nations. The first important effect of the declaration is that the Soviet Union will not consider the Nationalist regime as a proper member of the Security Council, where China shares the right of veto with Russia, the United States, Britain and France. The Soviet Union previously broke off diplomatic relations with the Chinese Nationalist Government and accorded recognition to the Communist regime in Peiping. Replying to Mr Vyshinsky in the Assembly, Dr. Chieh Hqu-kan, the Chinese delegate, said: “Mr Vyshinsky, your mere wish put the Chinese Communists in oiir seats in the Assembly. If your wish were law. then 80 per cent, of the delegates in the Assembly would be unseated.” He added: “In a few days we shall indict you and your Government.”
