RELIEVING WORK BY TEACHERS
RATES FOR PART TIME SERVICE “There is a potential teaching strength in the married women of the community; but how great this may be is unknown,” says uhe Education Department in an appeal for assistance in meeting the shortage of staff in public schools. “Many women who have left the service in recent years may have young families, and for that reason are not free to take up teaching again. There is a call now to those who have no such obligations or whose children have grown beyond the needs of immediate supervision.” The Education Department is asking teachers to bring to the notice of/aH such women the special condition# under which they are offered part-time employment to relieve the shortage “Headmasters will be pleased to assist in interpreting the syllabuses and new methods to those who feel themselves out of touch,” the message says. In part-time relieving work, the department says, “an adequate salary is provided for morning and afternoon teaching. The minimum rate for certified teachers is 5s 6d an -hour, or £4 2s 6d a week for morning teaching and £2 15s a week for afternoon teaching. This includes holiday pay. “Those permanent teachers who relieve either voluntarily or at the request of Education Boards in positions away from , their own schools may be paid an additional £6O a year, plus a lodging allowance of £6O (if eligible) and any travelling expenses that may be incurred.”
