TOURIST TRADE
“GREATEST INDUSTRY IN N.Z.” ADDRESS TO WESTLAND PROGRESS LEAGUE From Our Own Reporter GREYMOUTH, May 23. The tourist trade was one of the greatest industries New Zealand had ever had, said Mr L. J. Schmitt, general manager of ue Tourist Department, in an address to the Westland District Progress League at Hokitika last evening. More New Zealanders than ever were travelling in New Zea■land to-day, he said, and last year the total handled by the department was 250,000. . The. South Island’s total was increased by 1000 people during the last year. New Zealand to-day was “pretty well off” for transport, but was not so well off yet for accommodation, though this would follow, he said. Big plans were train for the South Island, generally, and for the North Island, too, he said. These included such items is the provision of aerial tramways ior the South Westland glacial which would ensure that young and old could make the trip from the bottom to the top of the glaciers. Two or three thousand more tourists could have been sent to Westland last year had hotel accommodation been availible, Mr Schmitt said.
