ANTI COMMUNISTS IN MELBOURNE
♦ DEMONSTRATORS ATTEND PARTY MEETING MELBOURNE, May 23. Blows were exchanged at a lively Communist Party meeting on the Yarra bank, Melbourne, and police intervention was necessary. A group of about 30 naval ratings and soldiers interjected throughout the meeting, and the speakers were also heckled by former servicemen in other parts of the crowd. The antiCommunists sang the National AnthenT and marching songs. I In retaliation, about 20 Communists crowded on to- the platform and sang the "Internationale.’’ Mounted and foot police broke up the crowd after it had refused to disperse. Then the soldiers and sailors formed ranks and marched to Princes bridge, singing patriotic songs. Later naval patrols dispersed an attempt by about 60 sailors and airmen in uniform to break up a Communist lecture in Unity Hall.
