AUSTRALIA’S EXPORT OF TEXTILES

DECLINE OF MORE THAN 50 PER CENT. Australia’s exports of textiles have fallen off by 56 per cent, over the last year, the value of exports for the nine months ended March 31 being only £1,206,000. compared with £2,737,000 for the corresponding period of the previous trade year. Exports of yarns and manufactured fibres also show a 50 per cent, decline, falling from £1,808,000 to £940,000. Firms exporting these goods say that business had been killed by the 40-hour week and increased costs, according to the director of the Associated Chambers of Manufactures of Australia, Mr L. Withall.
