DISPUTE ON DIRT MONEY
SETTLEMENT WITH RAILWAYMEN The dispute concerning the payment of dirt money which delayed th? handling of a cargo of mixed bags of alkaline materials from the steamer Wellpark, was settled yesterday afternoon. The dispute arose when railway workers demanded Is 6d an hour dirt money, which was the rate that waterside workers were reported to be receiving. Under the terms of the settlement men working on railway sidings are to receive Is 6d an hour extra for handling the cargo, men working in
the railway sheds are to receive Is an hour and carriers are to be paid 6d more. It was originally reported that railway workers had been offered 2d an hour, later increased to 6d, but had rejected both offers. An agreement has now been reached, that each of the three major transport unions in Christchurch and Lyttelton—the watersiders. the railwaymen. and the drivers—will advise the others of rates of dirt money in such disputes.
