GRASS FIRE AT YALDHURST
HOUSE SAVED BY BRIGADES OUTBREAKS ON RAILWAY ' ' EMBANKMENT The Christchurch Fire Brigade answered six calls to fires yesterday, the most serious being at 414 Yaldhurst road, where a large grass fire threatened the property of Thomas John Armon. The call was received at 2.30 p.m. and was answered by units frorp the R.N.Z.A.F. station at Wigram and the Christchurch brigade. The fire was put out after good work had been done by the Wigram unit, and the only damage was the destruction of a fence behind the house. Earlier in the day, at 11.43 a.m., the central •brigade and the New Brighton division answered a call to 90 Hawke street, New Brighton, where 18 feet of paling fence had caught fire. The property was that of Lucy Ellen Buxton. The fire was put out without difficulty. At 12.25 p.m. the St. Albans division and the central brigade answered a call to a grass-Are between Fendalton road and Wroxton terrace, Fendalton. The fire, which was on a railway embankment, was probably caused by a passing train. Five minutes later the central brigade answered a call to a grass fire on embankment further down the railway line near Searells road, probably started by the same train. A rubbish fire was put out without difficulty at 108 Kingsley street, Waltham. The Sydenham division and an engine from headquarters answered the call at 3.11 p.m. At 6.02 p.m. the central and St. Albans brigades answered a call to a rubbish fire at 46 Albany street, St. Albans, a property occupied by Richard John Thomas.
